Well, get signed up! BTW, there's a boating course they offer
up here at the Sequim Bay YC. There's sessions for kids and
adults. It's been a lot of fun. I've helped on my days
off with the kid's program.
HN> Ok, you didn't tell me what happened yet...so I'll go get another cup
HN> o java and you go ahead and start the story....and make it good!
Actually, it was rather a silly thing to do: The wind wasn't
that heavy. In fact, I was out the week before alone in
heavier wind.
Anyhow, I went into irons to adjust the downhaul and cunningham.
Unfortunately, the boat had other plans. You'd have to see the
boat to see how it happen, but the mainsheet bound up. By the
time I was able to get back to it to release it, the boat went
over to a reach, and broached and turtled.
Well, me and the other boat couldn't get it back upright, so
they towed me in. The stem plate broke, as I new the water
was too shallow, but was hoping anyways.
Got the stem plate fixed and it's ready to rock & (I hope not!)
roll!
One thing I think I did find out was what those 2 extra corks
where for: There's 2 floatation tanks under the rails. When
it went over, they filled with at least 10 gals of water each.
Rather than adding additional bouyancy, they acted like sinking
keels instead. I'm sure it was the added weight plus the lost
bouyancy as to why we couldn't right it.
BTW, when I first got the boat ready for my first sail on it
before I bought it, I was told that those 2 corks were "extras"!
Next summer, during one of the sailing courses, I think I'll
test them out and find out how well they work. Should something
go wrong, two of the crew on the chase boat have wet suits
to give additional assistance....
... Rudderless and adrift in the wind.
