Only two positive ways:
1.  Borrow a 56k capable from a friend.  Or:
2.  Purchase a 56k from a reliable source offering a good
    return policy if not satisfied. Or, buy both at same
    time & return one or the other.
Bear in mind: Because your location is likely to be different from a
friend, your results could be either better or worse!! That's why
only testing WITH a modem of your choice at your location can deliver
an accurate result. It is also possible that within any given sizeable
community you and a friend could be using different types of telco
equipment, and for sure,you both will be using different connecting
paths to the central office switcher regardless.
