subject: USR Courier V34 problems

PE> Yet another problem today. I tried dialling Paragon, 02-597-7477
PE> about 3 times, and after negotiation got "NO CARRIER". I then went
PE> AT&F1 to get rid of the ATS27=48 which I had put in just last night,
PE> and I connected fine (at 2400 bps as expected). Needless to say....

PE> Oh yeah, and looking at my logs (good idea what!) I found out that
PE> everyone who was calling me since putting in ATS27=48 was connecting
PE> with MNP4 instead of LAPM! I think I'll document that as a bug.

Dunno, that particular one appears to be intended to be specifically
for use with other modems which DONT have the V42 detection phase but
DO support LAPM. Certainly its a bit weird to be getting MNP4 connects
in that situation, but presumably thats just because with no detection
phase, it defaults to the lowest error correction protocol.

          Bit 4 Bit 5 Result

          16 32 Disable Detection
                          phase, if you know
                          that the remote modem
                          does LAPM, but not
                          the Detection phase.

I think bug is a bit strong, more that its a special config which can have
some undesirable side effects, particularly when the default works fine.

PE> Oh, except that on my OUTGOING call to Dave Hatch, the connect was LAPM.

The online manual is a bit vague about that.

PE> As of 1995-02-10T13:45 I have gotten rid of this stupid S27=48 and
PE> substituted S34=128. This disables 19200 (sorry, Frank!) but has the
PE> benefit that I don't ask Rod's modem for a retrain, although it has made
PE> Rod's modem connect (once so far) at 12000 which dropped out soon after.

PE> Interestingly, I had to do exactly the same thing on my Spirit
PE> Thunder, disable V32terbo because it was screwing up V32bis modems!

Interesting point come to think of it.

PE> Actually, I can't be bothered documenting these problems anymore.
PE> If I actually owned the machine and the problems were happening
PE> over a period of time, I would make the effort, but this modem
PE> is such a pile of XXXX that I've got bug overload.

Life wasnt to be easy |-)
