Short answer: Filk music is the folk music of science fiction and fantasy
fandom; it includes both original songs and parodies. It's associated with
science fiction conventions, and also with overlapping groups such as the
Society for Creative Anachronism. I expect that other answers will also
show up on this thread.

There will be a filk convention near Philadelphia this June. Check:
