Onr reason is cancer. The problem any multi-cellular organism faces is to
tell its cells, which are derived from billions of generations of divisions,
that now is the time to stop dividing. One way of doing this is to
incorporate a genetic counter, such as a stretch of DNA that isn't copied at
the end of each chromosome, to limit the total number of divisions allowed.
The consequence is that lifespan is also limited, but in evolutionary terms
this is a small price to pay if the chance of surviving many years of
predation, disease, famine and war is in any case negligible.
