Caveat:  none of the newly-repentant neocons are claiming that the war was
a mistake.  They're all saying the same thing: their  strategy to overthrow
Saddam and replace him with a democratic Iraqi government friendly to
western interests was brilliant, but was botched in the implementation
phase.

They simply can't accept the fact that overthrowing Saddam was a mistake.
