I think that deep down, they think that if you get rid of bad guys, liberal democracy (rule of law, electoral losers don't reach for their guns, respect for property rights, all that other Good Stuff) is the natural default. Wouldn't it be pretty to think so? That's very far from the main Anglo-American conservative tradition -- which used to spend a lot of time trying to understand the unusual and fortunate conditions that have fostered the emergence of democracy. Instead, they indulged in just the kind of starry-eyed wishful thinking they like to accuse "the left" of in other contexts.
