Your post echoes two thoughts I have been chewing over recently.

First, we who are affluent enough to congregate here really are lucky
compared with many others. What I despise most about our Prime Minister
John Howard (and others of his ilk) is his complete inability to imagine
life from the other side. I'm sure that he believes that if he had been
born in an impoverished outback Aboriginal community, that his natural
talent would have shone through, and he would be a successful lawyer
instead of sniffing petrol or similar.

Second, whereas it's easy to see how completely absurd is the intellectual
position of religious leaders in Iran etc, it's becoming harder to see any
fundamental distinction between a necon christian from Washington and a
whacko islamist from the other side of the world.
