subject: USB on IBM T23 problem

This is _very_ strange. I've never had much luck getting USB to work
with eCS/OS2, but have got to a stage where I need it to work, since I
have no other easy way of backing up my T23.

I recently aquired a FireLite USB2 hard drive, 40 GB. Plugged into the
T23 under Win2K or Linux, it works. Plugged into the T23 under eCS
(either 1.2r or the latest 2.00 beta) it doesn't. Under the beta I get
a popup saying that drive G: has been attached, but I cannot access it
(another popup says that it is incorrectly formatted). Under 1.2r, I
don't get a popup announcing that it is attached, but Dfsee can see it,
and it appears as a removable in the drives folder. Any attempt to
access it gets me a 'drive not ready' error under 1.2r.

After reading Lon Hooker's article in Voice, I was prepared to
repartition and reformat it, but wanted to do a bit more testing before
I had to. So I plugged it into one of the desktops (currently running
the latest 2.0 beta). It took a while to mount, but as soon as it did,
I could access it without any apparant problems. A lot faster on the
desktop as well, since it is USB 2 as opposed to the USB 1.1 that the
T23 has.

As a further experiment, I took the drive that normally lives in the
T23's docking station (a 12GB drive with a single JFS partition) and
put it into a USB 2 housing. I get the same results from it - on the
desktop machine I can access it without any problems at all, on the
T23, I get 'drive not ready' or 'incorrectly formatted' errors.

It seems to be a problem specific to eCS on the T23, since the drives
can be accessed under either Linux or Win2K on the laptop, and can be
accessed under eCS on the desktop. But I have _no_ idea where to go
from here to get it to work. Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

Both the drives I've tried have LVM information, which is being
correclty remapped when there is a drive letter conflict. On the T23,
I've used a USB floppy drive and a USB mouse, both of which work. But
I've never manged to get my camera read on the laptop (haven't tried it
on the desktop yet - guess I'll have to give that a shot soon), so USB
in general is obviously working, even under eCS. Just not USB storage.

This is becoming _very_ frustrating!

paul.
