You -have- to have at least an AT in there somewhere.   The bloody modem
doesn't have a crystal ball.

Sequence - initialize the modem by power off.  Send it _NOTHING_.   Ring
the phone line.  The result has to be baud rate at last known saved rate -
and there's no way on earth it can be anything else.
