PL tones are also known as "sub-audible" tones or CTCSS (Continuous Tone
Controlled Squelch System.) A CTCSS tone is transmitted continously
while a person is talking. Certain systems require that a CTCSS tone be
present in the transmission to open the squelch on a repeater or on the
receiving party's radio. With a CTCSS system, you only hear
transmissions that carry the tone at which your receiver is set. Not
likely you'd want this on a scanner 'cause it'd really limit what you
could hear. A CTCSS display unit would be nice, That is, a unit that
doens't require the tones to open the squelch, but displays what CTCSS
tone is being transmitted.
