Greetings All,
Well, I've been given an unofficial promotion at work /
school....that of Computer Tech for the school !
It's now my wondrous job to spend 5 hours a week bringing the
school's computer equipment and connectivity up to par ! (Gee, at 5 hours a
week, maybe by the year 2020 we might actually get to the year 1996 !)
With this in mind, I have a few questions that I thought perhaps you
folks could answer:
1) Anybody got any Apple II GS keyboards for sale ?? We could use..
....oh....about 50 of 'em. Not my first choice in hardware
either, but I thought, maybe if I get them some keyboards for
what they've got in their rooms, perhaps it'll "tide them
over" until I can do better things around here.
People and kids steal and trash the keyboards, so we need
more.
Also, we need more apple mice too !
Let me know quantity and price !
2) Well, get this: I've got a low-level Pentium machine at school.
Got it as a part of a grant. Too bad the district is taking
forever to put a PHONE LINE in my room! Otherwise, I'd have
the kids calling out daily !
Now the district has done something REALLY stupid: Contract
out to a company to handle all of their phone service ! We
now have proprietary jacks and phones throughout the
building ! All of them are cheap, only half are actually
working ! NONE of them seems to like the modem on that
Pentium ! I try dialing out and it can't detect a dial tone!
Well, anyways, if I WERE able to call out with this Pentium,
I was wondering:
Since we have tons of Macs, but none of them online, is it
possible for me to fire up this Pentium, download Mac share-
ware off of BBS's and the Web, save them to an IBM disk, then
eject them, walk over to a MAC, pop in the disk, and actually
transfer the file to the MAC's hard drive for use ??
I know normally this wouldn't be possible, but I've heard
stories of software that will allow you to do this.
3) On that Pentium machine...I'm running Win95 on it. I'd like to
"secure" the system, so that kids can't open certain folders
or just plain trash the system. Any good shareware out there
for this ??
I'm probably going to make this machine only accessible to
teachers at first, but it's still possible for a student to
get at the machine.
4) Know of any interesting computer projects for classes / kids ?
Looking for something more interesting than the typical
"look at this CD-ROM" kind of thing !
Thanks for your advice !
