-= Pete Replied to Bill Grimsley about: USR Courier V34 problems =-

G'day Bill

PC> i just tried mine using Telix 3.22 DOS starting at a terminal
PC> speed of 57600, note after i change the port speed all i type is
PC> ATI4 and the modem senses the change and adjusts.

BG> That's correct, because the serial port auto-bauds on the first
BG> AT command (ATI4). However, if a call comes in BEFORE you issue
BG> an ATI4 command, the response won't be the expected RING, but
BG> garbage instead. Seems that ATZ is not a valid command for the
 BG> port to auto-baud,

I've since realized this and reproduced what Paul was stating in the
first place, what i was doing wrong was issueing ATI4 and not ATZ.

PC> The modem changes speed without problem, i'd say there is
PC> something wrong with your modem.

BG> Nope, the anomaly occurs because the USR doesn't auto-baud its
BG> serial port on an ATZ command. If you follow this sequence, you
BG> should be able to see the problem quite clearly...

have done so and reproduced it.

BG> If you repeat the above with AT&F1 as Telix's init string,
BG> you'll note that the problem no longer appears. However, given
BG> that most people don't continually change their serial port
 BG> rates, I can't see it being a long-term problem.

It seems to be more of a quirk than a problem, once your aware of it
it's not hard to work around i wasn't even aware it existed until Paul
pointed it out.
