Kris, thanks for your help.  At this point I can guarantee I have the
npwv.dll file from the wvgui1.01.zip in Firefox's plugins directory, with,
I believe, all traces of earlier versions abolished (no old video2.exe or
npwv.dll except on rarely-read hard drives used for backups).

Links marked as VIDEO WMP do not invoke WV; instead the files download. 
They show up on my hard drive with the extension .wmv, which I assume
should play because the extension is listed at Settings>Interfact. 
However, loading the media produces a popup message saying, "ERROR! Cannot
init video."

Links marked as VIDEO MOV cause WV to start running, but nothing happens. 
If I download the file to my hard drive, I can load the media and watch.
