Agreed. That's why I've chosen practially "all of the above", then
networked the lot together. Each OS has its strength and weaknesses,
and none are best suited to everything. By combining all of them on
separate machines networked together, I get the best of all worlds.
I run Linux, OS/2 Warp Connect and Win 95 (with a NT box temporarily
hooked up for installation purposes). Even DOS may get a look in yet,
unless I can find some fancy network drivers for OS/2 for specific
specialised DOS apps. :-)
What I would choose if I had one machine would depend on the main
application. A few examples:
Running a BBS. I'd probably choose OS/2 for this (I did! :) ). It
seems to support BBS's extremely well. However, for a fancy GUI based
and Internet connected system, Win NT would be worth considering for a
big budget operation.
Surfing the Net. Windows 95 would probably get this job, as the latest
Internet applications are Win 95 specific.
Running an ISP. Two choices: Unix / Linux, which is fast, efficient
and well suited to this task, or Windows NT, which is also well suited,
though more expensive, but easier to maintain.
Packet radio BBS: Surprisingly, I think plain old DOS still has the
upper hand here. Several major applications are still DOS based, though
Linux looks like where the "next generation" will turn.
Game playing: Difficult choice. Depends on the game, but DOS or
Windows 95 (and perhaps OS/2) would be the best contenders here.
As they say, horses for courses. Anyway, hope this defuses the OS
debate for a while, and time to shut up and get back on topic. :-)
