Did this put your modem offline at all?  If not, then the S setting to
disable "+++" is not necessary.

To be honest, I have no idea - few modems these days seem to have a
"neat" appearance at all.  The M34F case is basically the same as
the old M7F case, so NetComm's been using it for a few years now.  Without
actually having owned a USR, I assume that USR have been using the same
case style for a lot longer and don't see any point/need in changing.
