Actually I've never thought that Yar's death was all that badly handled.
I suspect that the attitude comes from the badly-thought out line that,
as I recall, Picard delivered to the effect that her death was for
nothing.  Far from it - she died doing her duty attempting to rescue
another crew member.  In the real world, people get decorated for doing
what Tasha did.
However, I am glad she showed up again in "Yesterday's Enterprise",
since one of my favorite Trek characters, and perhaps my favorite TNG
character, is Commander Sela.
