-=***> Kenneth Newman on the GONG !! <***=-
PS> though he was disappointed that there was no Gong per se.
KN> Well, anytime you go see Ging you never know what you're
KN> going to get.
When I first met him in Santa Barbara, where we housed him for about
three months after the first LA show, he was in a sad, and rather
bummed space. I think a lot of it had to do with their luck, or
maybe they needed to change their aproach to making music, and
taking care of it. Which they could not make up their minds
about... it's only been until the past three years that they
finaly got GAS started and going, to become a support machine
for their work. At first, I wonder if there was a bit of the
dramatic travelling troubadour syndromme, and I wonder if this
hippie thing just dies, as they all had to pay rent, pay for
food, and then take care of their families.
KN> Daevd is also, like most other musicians, completely
KN> incapable of judging his own work, which is one of the
KN> reasons, for example, that producers are so important.
I don't know if I agree with this or not. Daevid, is not a song
writer at all, and he has always disliked that idea. He just
wants to live "his Music", and "life". Producers tend to look at
the commercial aspect of things, and for some people, a different
atmosphere is necessary.
Daevid is not exactly thrilled at only being able to put food on
the table through Gong, and not himself. His solo works are
reminiscent, of Peter Hammill, let's say, in "feel" in that
it is a total personality baring his soul... and that's something
that is hard to do in a group atmosphere, where others have to be
taken seriously.
KN> So yeah, Daevid was definitely not a happy
KN> camper. Yet I caught many of the shows on that tour and
KN> have to admit he played some fine guitar solos then.
He sure did... Divided Alien Band, it was called. I still have a small
poster in my wall.
... gilliam___all people have a mind, and reason, errr, and vision...
