Twyman's book "Prism and Lens Making" is now available in it's
second edition:

        ISBN    Paperback:0852741502

Discusses that effect, But Roger Ceragioli's  message on this in the March
1999 Archive, is more practical and vastly less expensive.

The effect is noticable both on the edge and as a global deformation of the
whole optic.
