Kate, the engine noise isn't necessarily the fault of the equipment.
I had spark plug noise and alternator whine on my scanner, and on my
2 meter ham radio both on receive and transmit. To get rid of it, I
rewire my power line using a good piece of coax. I used the center
conductor for the hot lead, and grounded the shield on both ends of
the coax. Just doing this got rid of 90% of the interference. To get
rid of the rest I bought a filter at Radio Shack. It worked like a
charm. Now both the scanner and the ham gear have a nice, clear
signal on receive, and I have a clear signal when I transmit on two
meters too.
