I didn't managed to look inside the product, unfortunately they didn't let me go so far. A lot of the current Cisco products are partly developed by USRobotics, so I wouldn't be surprised if there is a Texas Instruments chip in there doing something........ As for how the product changes between the two cabling systems I haev no idea, I couldn't even get to see the back of the product.....
