| subject: | Diamond 28.8K Modem |
G'day all!
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions (John Rich - please feel
free to answer as you will be on topic here ) for a connect problem I'm
having.
I don't believe it is the modem at fault, however, any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Computer: 486dx2-66 Clone
Modem: Diamond datapump internal 28.8 v34 (austel approved)
Initialisation: AT &F B0 L3 W2 &C1 &D2 (as recommended in docs)
Phone Line: Older analogue exchange.
Comms Prog: Terminate v3.0 (emulation patch fixed)
OS: Win95 or MS DOS mode (same results)
My problem is that I will sit down to try and ring a BBS and in the answer
section of Terminate I get a whole lot of garbage and Terminate just beeps.
Lasts for about 15-20 seconds and then drops carrier.
Sometimes Like last night I got a 26400 on the fourth attempt. Tonight I have
tried 6 times with the same result. This morning I got a 26400VFC connect
with no problems.
I can live with 24000 or 26400, but what I can't stand is the amount that all
these attempts are costing me.
I have an aquaintance in Telstra in Sydney who has been very helpful. He had
the locals test the line with the following results:
7volts on foreign battery on one link
3volts on foreign battery on the other link.
I believe that although this is acceptable for voice communcations or
lower speed modem transfers I am told it could cause interference on high speed
modem transfers.
I reported it to 1100 as requested and two days in a row they report that the
line is fine with no noise. The techinician also gave me the standard crap
about the PSTN only guarenteeing 4800 transfers (ROFL....not even 9600).
Any one with any suggestions or even solutions would be appreciated.
Cheers
John
PS I would prefer not to upgrade to an AXE line as it would involve a number
change.
