It takes an egg about 7-10 days to make its way "down the tubes" before it's
expelled. Sometimes stress will delay the expulsion by a day or two. But
three weeks is absolutely mind-boggling! There *was* something wrong with any
hen that carries an egg for that amount of time...
However, there are symptoms that imitate an egg in the abdomen. As you know,
birds will sometimes hold their overnight poops. They are very swollen in the
morning and, to the untrained, might resemble an egg. Hens in a brooding mode
are especially prone to holding their excretment overnight.
Swollen abdomens can also be symptoms of disease, including tumors and
proventricular dilatation syndrome (macaw wasting disease).
ANY bird that does not appear "normal" in appearance or behavior should be
taken to the vet as soon as possible.
