While tripping merrily through the mail, Martin Ridgley was overheard

JG> I have about 2000 albums mostly from the 60s and late 50's, mostly
JG> rock, I am trying to sell. Some of what I have is really rare, but
JG> I do not want to peacemeal it out, I want a buyer for everything at
JG> once. Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone with the necessary
JG> interest or financial capability to work with me on this.
JG> Oh well, I'll keep trying...
MR> Just out of interest, how long have you been looking for a buyer?
MR> It's been my experience in dealing with other collectors, that you
MR> might have a hard time selling the entire collection in one deal -
(text deleted to save bandwidth)
MR> Nevertheless, I'm always interested in talking about records, so if
MR> you want to chat, send me a message in the general music echo, or if
MR> it's about Beatles records, in the Beatles echo, or via netmail. I'd
MR> love to hear from you! Best of luck, John!
I'd second everything Martin says. About the only way I've ever found one
could sell an "entire collection" of ANYTHING is to a dealer, where
10-25% of book is a pretty fair price. Dealing on a "collector to
collector" basis generally you will move individual pieces at around 50%
of book. (FWIW, I've NEVER payed "book", even at a dealer, where around
75% is usually "top dollar", at least around here {the upper midwest}).
I'm thinking your best bet, and worth the money judging from the size of
your collection, would be to take out an ad in "Goldmine" for a few months,
and offer each item either at "set sale" or auction. If you go the auction
route you'll probably realise the greatest return, but you do run the risk
of having the nicest pieces go and most of what you have gathering dust, or
going at prices well below what you'd like to get (although more than a
ealer
would pay.)
