The message from Stuart Dubois rises higher:
SD> Oregon _Distant Hills_
SD> First time I listened to this, I managed to listen to the
SD> ENTIRE FUCKING ALBUM at 45. It sounds much better
SD> at 33. There it is, folks, Oregon's _Distant Hills_: It
SD> sounds better at 33 than 45. You read it here first. Pretty
SD> good jazz with some rock influences, but not all gnarly like
SD> Maha and RTF at their best. Fairly acoustic. I haven't
SD> heard this much yet, but it warrants futher atenshin.
I fell in love with the first song immediately when I heard it at your
place. Most of side 1 was breathtakingly beautiful. It's all folky and
medieval and stuff.
SD> The Pretty Things _Real Pretty_
SD> Apparently a 2 LP comp of their 2 famous albums, _SF
SD> Sorrow_ and _Parachute_. I say "apparently" because the
SD> album never actually says so in so many words. The liner
SD> notes talk about those albums (and no others), without
SD> specifying that is what is contained on the vinyl, and the
SD> outside of the album cover never even mentions the original
SD> album titles. Had never heard anything by them, except for
SD> "SF Sorrow is Born" and "Private Sorrow/Balloon Burning",
SD> the song that made me go find this album. _SF Sorrow_ is
SD> generally considered the first concept album, although the
SD> liner notes mention Tom Rush _Circle Game_ as preceding
SD> it (no, *I* never heard of that one either). I think this is
SD> right up your alley, Clark. In the _Mr. Fantasy_, _Shazam_,
SD> early Status Quo, _Ogden's Nut GF_, classic English psych
SD> feel.
I'm listening to it right now. Pretty good, but nothing to *really* get
me going. It's early yet.
SD> Singles:
SD> ABWH "Brother of Mine"
SD> (The Yes minus Squire group.) The cover says it's backed
SD> with "Vultures" which isn't on the album, but the sticker
SD> says it's a promo with "Brother" on both sides. Either way,
SD> I just bought it for the cool Dean slipcover artwork (an
SD> eagle in a flooded Grand Canyon-type scene).
YeaH, but it would've been great if "Vultures" was on it. I still
haven't heard it and it's supposed to be good.
SD> Apollo "Joy 100"
SD> Backed with - who cares? I hadn't heard this in years, and
SD> wondered if it was really as good as I remembered. It is.
SD> What a masterpiece. It's one of those perfect little "pocket"
SD> instrumentals, like "Classical Gas", "Pollen" by Pulsar, and a
SD> million others I could name.
I'd never heard this before, but it is great.
SD> Eskaton _4 Visions_
SD> A great album. Closer to Magma than other non-Magma
SD> Zeuhl I've heard.
I'm going to have to get this one. A bit more light-hearted than Magma
but definitely zeuhl.
SD> Maneige _Libre Service - Self Service_
SD> French-Canadian prog. Haven't choked this one down yet.
SD> I hear things I like and things I don't. Sounds like prog...
It seemed like Prog Pop to me. That's fine for me, but it's never been
a really winner style for you.
