From memory it controlled the sound level from the speaker.

Not used generally.

Type this into the modem from your terminal prog, save with AT&W, set
your port to 19200, set CTS/RTS hardware handshaking ON, Xon/Xoff software
handshaking OFF, Atobaud OFF (if using Telix), make the initialisation
string ATZ^M and you should be away and running.
