I think the concept, while good for science fiction, has no basis in
reality. A body needs at least a minimal brain (and therefore a minimal
head) to survive...there are too many things that need to be constantly
regulated and told to work.
A good (?) example of this is anencephalitic babies. They are born with
only very minimal amounts of brain tissue, and no cerebral cortex or the
like. These children rarely live very long even with respirators,
etc...their bodies just give up and the heart stops.
