RL> TS> No remorse until the wife has a real fit, though. :)
RL> Not even then. He just buys her a new piano (Hi Lee!)
Well, what would be the equivalent to a pack of D'Addario 10s? That's
all I can afford... Thank God Kate doesn't want a piano... Hmmm... A few mics
and a flute, though... Damn, flutes aren't that cheap, either. :)
RL> Check the specs on the Ampage web site. Look up the design limits for
RL> the two-tube push-pull class AB, and double it for four tubes. I THINK
RL> the absolute maximum dissipation for the EL34 is around 30 watts
RL> (each)... meaning that if you push the plate voltage to the limit, it's
RL> going to be biased VERY cold to keep the dissipation within limits.
So, to push a four tube EL34 amp to the limit would produce a nice
120... A little too much power.
How much does a 6L6GC dissipate? The Peavey 5150 hits 120 watts and
it's powered by four 6L6GCs.
RL> The clean channel doesn't do much crunch, but the 5881s did have
RL> something to do with it. There's nothing wrong with a 5881/6L6GC, but
RL> some amps weren't designed for them, and the Marshalls were slightly
RL> modded (at the factory) to accept them when the EL34s were in short
 RL> supply.
Well, I would still expect something, being that I was running the
thing quite high, overdriving the input with my processor. While it was
actually closer to the sound of a steel plate being shredded, I could distort
my Deluxe 112+ with the processor, and that's all tranny at 94 watts RMS. :)
The Marshall was COOOOOOLD as the iceburg that the Titanic hit and all
treble. Only way I got a warm sound out of it was by getting it loud and
hitting it hard with my processor and using the processor's EQ and
overdrives. And then the distortion of the Marshall itself sounded like
crap... Maybe my one experience with the JCM900 was bad. I played through a
JCM 800 that sounded pretty nice, even though it was one of the later
hotrodded ones. The reissues sound nice. Hell, even the higher wattage
Valvestates sound nice. :)
