Howdy David,
Are you opening the file for BINARY?   If you open a binary file for INPUT 
ou
are going to run into all kinds of problems.
Reading a binary file one character at a time is also inefficient.  GET what 
you need in 5kb chunks instead of banging the hard drive 5 thousand times.  
Use LOF to establish the size of the last GET.
