Correct. Uncompressed, the effective throughput can be no better than your
connect speed (ignoring error correction, which improves the throughput).
When compressed by the modem, though, the throughput is determined by the
actual connect speed of the modem multiplied by the compression factor
obtained. Less any overhead, of course. How much compression you get will
depend on the nature of the file itself and how "compressible" it is.
There are "standard" file suites available that can be used for testing, but
they're really only useful for comparing one modem implementation against
another - more work than you're likely willing to take. :-)
