While it is true, slugs are "deathly afraid" (if slugs have the capacity to 
fear  :)   salt, flower beds are not too crazy about it's presence, either.  
I would use another method, personally.  If anyone still *has* dish water, it 
is helpful in controlling many types of things that live in the topsoil... (I 
have used it for years to keep grubs *out*!   :)
