	Hello John,
		This sounds very much like a problem I'm having, even though my modem is
only 2400 bps.

	My solution: Before trying to dial out I get the modem to perform a self
test by using the AT&T8 command. If this returns garbage instead of
text I re-initialise the modem and try again. Sometimes, like today, I may
have to do this a few times. Once I get a text response, which should be
"000", I know I will get a good connection when I dial.

	I still don't know why I need to go through this messing about, but it
certainly saves me a lot of phone calls. Try it. BTW If you get a better
answer than this one could you pass it on to me, please?
