Is it a novel or a collection of short stories?
The second book in a series frequently is weaker than the first--SBS or
Second Book Syndrome.

Yes, that's always a disappointment.  I've also read novels in which the
Detective only appears near the end of the book--I bought the book because
I enjoyed the character, so I feel cheated when this happens.
... Discoveries are made by not following instructions.
