-=> Quoting Zaynab Richmond to All <=-
ZR> but am feeling that pushing him is not right and that he'll learn in
ZR> his own sweet time... but in the meantime, how do I honestly satisfy a
ZR> requirement for 4.5 hours a week of spelling and writing? Any
ZR> suggestions??
If you teach him reading and writing in areas where he has a strong
interest, buy tapes he can listen to, teach words associated with
pictures where he has an interest such as trucks, stars, etc
whatever. Eventually he will get an interest enough to want to do
things. I agree with you that 4.5 hours of reading and writing is
too much to expect of a 6 year old. He will indeed do it at his own
time.
ZR> Aaron's strong subjects (areas of interest) are science and art. I am
ZR> wondering if I'm doing him a disservice in pushing writing skills when
ZR> he really wants to do science... and it seems that every spare minute
ZR> is spent in
ZR> art projects, so we're going way over the mere 1.5 hours per week that
ZR> are required.
So incorporate art and science in his reading/writing time. Have
him make a science collage out of letters, etc. Have him check out
a library book (simple one) on science of the stars etc and he can
read along with you on the words. Sit him on your lap and help him
recognize the letters.
ZR> One more thing I'd like to ask... what kinds of P.E. activities do
ZR> your children like? The advisor tells me that taking the kids to the
ZR> park is not enough -- I have to /teach/ him something. Today we did
ZR> broad jumping and playing frisbee. Any other suggestions for a six
ZR> year old??
ZR> Zaynab
Enroll him in a simple activity if your local parks and recreation
centers offer those throughout the year and see if there are a few
classes like lil tykes basketball, gymnastics, etc. Even Karate
would be ok.
