Can you try forcing V.34 at a lower speed e.g. 14400 bps?

Some modems have retraining disabled by default (not a good idea), and
therefore V.32bis 14400 bps may work fine and V.34 with initial connect at
28800 bps and retrains disabled may mean that (eventually) the link
disconnects.

Are retrains enabled at both ends of the link?
