-=> Quoting Sondra Ball to Robin Arnhold <=-
Hi, Sondra,
SB> A friend of mine out in Arizona had to do some work on the Navajo rez.
SB> She talked about getting "really strange" directions; like, "You'll
SB> come to a house with a old woman sitting on the porch." She said,
SB> "What happens if the old woman is going to the toilet while I drive by?
SB> I'll never find the place." Luckily, the woman wasn't; and she did
SB> find it.
:-) Up where I was raised, the old-timers give directions in terms of
people and places long gone. I might refer to Martiny's road and
everybody who's lived there for forty-fifty years will know exactly what
road I mean even though Mr. and Mrs. Martiny passed on 30-35 years ago,
haven't lived on that road for 45 years, and the road has a different
official name. And I noticed in July that the people who live on the
cut-off still have a real nasty gander, although surely not the same
nasty gander they had 25 years ago. If I were giving directions to
somebody going to some place like Old Abe's, I might very well tell them
to go a mile and half past the place with the mean-tempered gander and go
straight when the highway turns.
I suspect there aren't too many old women spending a lot of time sitting
on porches on the Navajo rez, just the same as there aren't too many
places with ganders up where I was raised.
Take care,
Robin
