The Religious Right plans to use its political power to change America in
November. Unless other Americans act, we may be closer to theocratic
government by 1997.
The Religious Right seems to believe that its religious beliefs should be
legislated into law for all Americans. Americans United for Separation of
Church and State opposes those efforts, contending that this tends toward an
establishment of religion,
which is prohibited by the First Amendment. The Religious Right has a broad
agenda. Elements of the Religious Right are working toward more censorship
of books, art, videos, movies, and even the electronic media. Some are
pushing to have prayer impos
ed upon impressionable youth in public schools. Their attitude toward gays
and lesbians is well known. They are active in efforts to provide tax
funding of religious schools, where children often will be taught to be
intolerant. Some would require pub
lic officials to be Christian even though Article Six of the Constitution
calls for no religious test for public office. They have already been
successful in restricting a woman's right to choose to have an abortion. The
more radical ones attack medica
l clinics and call homicide justifiable in such instances. There are those
who oppose the United Nations, attack environmentalism, call for abolishment
of public schools, oppose contraceptive methods, demean feminism and degrade
pluralism, multicultural
ism and diversity.
That is why Americans United believes that progressive organizations must
band together and share resources in order to be certain that the Religious
Right (a minority) is not successful merely because of their organized
efforts against the majority.
