Hi, Sondra,
RA> JC> BTW, the "discussion group" on another "service" I might have
> JC> mentioned to you or Sondra has decided NOT to read/discuss "Indian
> JC> Killer" as it might be construed to be too "anti-white" and "angry".
> JC> They are going to read and discuss "Reservation Blues" instead.
RA>They might do well to think about why some of the characters express
>"anti-white" sentiments. I frankly thought it portrayed contemporary
>Native opinion very accurately, if not always completely (meaning that
SB> I think that's true. But I'm not sure many whites want to hear
SB> contemporary native opinion.
I think you're right. Certainly many of the messages I've read here over
the past four years and some of the flame wars bear this out--and one
must also bear in mind that it is likely that a higher percentage of the
white people here are interested in learning contemporary native opinion
than in the population at large. Sometimes the truth can be a bitter
pill to swallow, but it is likely to serve as a better tool in the long
run. A white person may not like what many Native people think and may
not agree with it at all, but in knowing those opinions, he or she will
know exactly what 'time' it is in Indian Country (other than Indian
Standard Time)--they are less likely to wander onto the nearest rez and
say something like 'Hey, Chief, take me to your sweat lodge'.
SB> They want to hear only this wonderful
SB> noble native religious stuff. I know, from long experience, how hard
SB> it is to get angry Indian poetry published in white poetry magazines;
SB> but I bet I wouldn't have any trouble getting some mystical Indian
SB> stuff published.
I'm sure some of them would lap it up and beg for more.
Take care,
Robin
