Actually, that's a common misperception.  The Telnet protocol is completely
different than anything else, luckily, most clients do what's called "passive
negotiation" which means wait until the server does something telnetty before
doing all the telnet stuff.  So in general, nost plain text protocols can be
accesed with a telnet connection as long as an ascii 255 never goes over the
socket.
