In the bad old fifties here in the US, they used to sell a wide camel's
hair brush for LP records with Polonium radioactive strip attached, behind
a spiffy grille. You sent it in for refurbishment every couple of years (I
forget the half-life of PO, but it's of that magnitude). Just like your
Mason-Pearson.

Then someone noticed that you got quite a skin burn from the alpha if you
put the thing in your pocket for as little as ten minutes. There was a
flush of "be careful" notices in the hi-fi press, and then,
magically, one day - the thing was off the market.

Ah, for the bad old days of straight-through glasspaks, no regulation,
reheat air-conditioning, perky loose women, and no AIDS.
