Good news folks! The people at Netcomm technical support called
my USR V.E as I asked them to do. They got connects of 26400,
28800 and 26400, meaning that it is possible to get a 28.8k
connect between the two modems. AND that is with me running an
older level (1995-07-05) drop of the code, which David Begley
demonstrated is worse than the 1995-07-18 code, at least as far
as talking to his modem is concerned.

I faxed in my order for for a Netcomm M34F today (Tuesday), and
they expect to deliver it tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday. I
requested that the users of my board call the Netcomm board in
Sydney to see how they fared with it. There were no complaints
about it, which could mean that they didn't call, or it could
mean that the Netcomms worked fine. Hopefully we'll find out
pretty soon just how good the Netcomms are. I've documented 13
problems with the USR so far, and there is one that I have not
documented (28800 connect with no EC) because I am waiting for
a response from the sysop as to what the modem was, and whether
he was mucking around with it at the time. Let's see how the
Netcomm goes when I get my hands on it! I still reckon that I'll
be documenting one soon after I get it, and that will be a
complaint about getting more 26400 connects than 28800 to Dave
Hatch, but I've got an open mind at this stage! I've checked my
logs, and I've been connecting at 28800 and 31600 every time
recently with Dave, so there is no excuse about the phone lines
being too bad to sustain those speeds.

Here are the logs from Netcomm support calling me. Oh, I should
point out that this was done through a PABX, which the Netcomm
guy said was liable to introduce something-or-other (hum?) into
the line, so it wasn't a fully fair test, but he expected that
I should connect at 28800 90% of the time, and 26400 the rest of
the time. Oh, and the reason for the absence of stats on the
first two calls is (I just realised) because the BBS is probably
initializing the modem before returning.
