"The United States denounced Friday "threats of intimidation or
violence" in Lebanon, where hundreds of thousands of protesters called
for the resignation of the government.

The massive demonstration against the government of Prime Minister Fuad
Siniora was called by the opposition led by the pro-Syrian Shiite militia
Hezbollah.

"The demonstrations, as you know, are aimed at toppling Lebanon's
legitimate and democratically elected government," said Tom Casey, a
State Department spokesman.

"And certainly threats of intimidation or violence isn't something
that I think anyone would consider democratic or a constitutional mechanism
for changing government.""
