Check local crafting, cross stitch stores or maybe the local
library for books with small designs or some borders that would be
suitable for what you want. I have found Dover Books has some Celtic
Knotwork books that have good usable borders that work well for
bookmarks. Also take a look for cross stitch books that have different
styles of borders such as Ukrainian(SP?)and Romanian These also work
well for gift bookmarks for family if you can go back to a country of
origin and look for different styles of stitching .
Also check your local Needlework shop, sometimes they have small
pieces of even weaves that work well for practicing on, or for book marks
and Xmas ornaments. Some people use these before they really try a large
piece of an even weave for that really nice picture of... You can use
Aida or an even weave and sew a lace trim onto it, use a hem stitch over
two or three threads, use a straight cross stitch border around the
pattern then fray about an inch all the way around. Use Ribband which is
Aida or even weave with a machined edging on it and just fold under the
ends or fray them. Find a friend with a serger or sewing machine with
some decorative stitches (if you don't have one) and have them sew
around the pieces (Works well if you do several at the same time, 15-20
minutes you can do 1/2 dozen. Then you stitch them up one for a thank
you.)
I would not use fray check near any stitching projects! This stuff
has been known to yellow with time and sometimes you may want to do one
for a special occasion and it would not do to have it start turning
yellow after just a few years. Also if they wash it, the glue (Which is
what fray check is) may wash out and the project might still shred.
Good luck with whatever choice you make and know we're here to help.
There is also a "CROSS-STITCHING" Echo which is doing a bookmark
exchange starting up real soon, ask your sys-op for it, any of us there
are willing to help too.
