G'day Nick

Well both my modems have flash ROM's, The USR has had 3 code revisions
uploaded into it to both enhance options and to fix bugs, The Netcomm
Smartmodem has also had 3 revisions of code uploaded to it one which
increased the number of saved profiles you could have from 1 to 4 as
well as adding extra commands, even computers have flashable BIOS
nowdays, IMO Flashrom's are just progress and far easier to use than
trying to pry a ROM revision out of a modem company.
