afaiaa. The bit order being right to left is a convenience for the
programmer, how they are actually stored by the processor is not our
concern.

Show us some code with the error please (just the structure and
associated #defines should be enough). I suspect you are using an
enumeration somewhere for the bits, and enumerations have to be ints.
