Pitch has survived centuries as a mirror making accessory because, it is
said , it flows slowly but sufficiently in order to conform with the
surface of the blank.

How then can pitch impact the stress if it will under stress flow and
relive the stress.

I also can not imagine that holding the glass ( or anything else) can be
done without  stressing it to some degree. If the glass tends to move
somewhere while holding fixture prevents it than  this can be done only by
applying some counterforce that is in the end stress.

Pitch will also stress the glass but will yield after some time
automatically reliving stress.
