subject: USR Courier???

While listening to Paul Edwards Pete heard:USR Courier???

G'day Paul

PC> USR on a great variety of modems but others here are using USR's
PC> to run BBS's, mail hubs etc that aren't having the problems you
 PC> seem to be having.

PE> They ALL have the autobaud fault in them.

True.

PE> They ALL have the retrain request on at least one V32bis modem.

If by saying "one V32bis modem" you mean the Supra could it not be the
Supra at fault, BTW is the Supra based on the Rockwell V32bis chip.

PC> I'm not paying out on you or saying you don't know what
PC> your doing, clearly you do and we all agree that ATZ resetting the
PC> port speed to a pre-saved value is behavior not seen in other modems,
PC> whether it's a bug, quirk or side effect of the AT&B2 command i don't
PC> know it's just there, do we write off the USR Courier as a crap modem
 PC> because of it.

PE> I didn't say it was a crap modem because of it, I said it is
PE> either a bug or a design fault. I've said on numerous occasions
PE> that it is only a minor problem. It's interesting how many
PE> people will try to turn my numerous claims of it being a minor
PE> problem into a "consistently says that it is a major problem".

Well i got the impression you considered it to be a major problem no
doubt others will have drawn the same conclusion.

PC> Have you ever considered the fact that the Courier you trialed
 PC> may have been faulty?

PE> Yes, briefly. Thought it was incredibly unlikely that there
PE> could be a hardware fault to blame for the low-level
PE> negotiation. Coupled with the easy-to-reproduce problems being
PE> easy-to-reproduce on EVERYONE's modems, once the problem was
 PE> found on mine.

I was commenting more on the number of problems you were having
compared to others not anything specific.

PC> some of the ATI11 dumps you posted as you stated yourself
PC> "Defied the laws of Physics", and i'm not refering to the ATZ
 PC> issue here.

PE> Dave Hatch also reported seeing it once.

I wasn't aware of that, must have missed that msg.

PE> Just because I'm the first to report it, doesn't mean that I'm
PE> the only one who has the problem, just that I'm the only one who
PE> bothered to report it. Been there, done that,

PE> found the Spirit II double-send yet?

Not sure, Back when i had an Series 3 E7 i use to get occasional lousy
throughput when connected to the DSE BBS which i think had Spirit II's
it could have been the double-send problem, i wasn't even aware of it
at the time.

PC> BTW Hows the M34F performing so far, i'm using an M11F on my
PC> mailer here and it gives me no problems apart from calling a
PC> system on very bad lines where i only get a 4800 connect, oddly
PC> enough the USR will get 16800 connects to that system.

PE> It's FAR WORSE than the Courier. Mainly because a Maestro SE
PE> 9600 can't connect to it at 9600. A secondary problem is the
PE> failure of a USR Sportster to connect with EC on 50% of times.
PE> The Courier gave 30% failed connects with a Supra. The Netcomm
PE> is giving 95% failed connects to a Maestro, and 50+% failed
PE> connects to a Sportster V34. That makes it worse than the
PE> Courier. In fairness to Netcomm though, support have not yet
PE> finished on the problem. The last thing they got me to try was
PE> %L11, which didn't work, so we'll see what they have to say
 PE> about that...

How are your phone lines, have you ever had them checked out.

There is also the #T command to increase the Tx level but will allow
you to go louder than -11dB the %L setting will reflect what you set
via #T, ie issueing AT#T10 and then AT&V will show %L as set to 10
even though AT%L10 will return an error if you try to set the Tx
level with it.
