It's a tough skill to learn. I had to teach this to my 6th graders when I
taught that grade level. It really helps if you can find a textbook or
something that has bold print for special words. It also helps to learn what
a "topic sentence" is before you try to teach outlining.
I don't think I really truly got the hang of outlining until high school. I
had a US History teacher in my junior year that wrote out the day's lesson on
the board in outline form. You were expected to start copying it as soon as
you walked in the room (and most everyone did, as it was a tremendous help in
studying for her tests). Due to her method, I finally understood outlining,
and I also got a good understanding of the flow of American history. I wish
I'd kept that notebook!
