subject: drilling primer holes

JP>On the subject of firing wax or rubber bullets with primers:
JP>Can anyone explain to me just WHY it is neccesary to drill the primer
JP>hole bigger in order to do this? I understand that the primer will back
The _flash hole_, not the primer pocket. The flash hole restricts the
vaporized primer from getting into the case, and pushes back. This does
not happen in a loaded round because the entire case as well as the
primer is being driven back by some 10,000 to 30,000 PSI of pressure, and
the primer and case both mash against the bolt face as far as possible.
The primer generates only a few hundred PSI, not enough to really slam
the case back, but enough to drive the primer out due to the resistance
of the gas resisting going through the small primer hole.
