| subject: | Diamond 28.8K Modem and Garbage on |
-=> Quoting John Gardeniers to John Wolski <=- -=> On 20 Feb 96 19:40:28 John Wolski mumbled to All <=- JW> My problem is that I will sit down to try and ring a BBS and in the JW> answer section of Terminate I get a whole lot of garbage and Terminate JW> just beeps. Lasts for about 15-20 seconds and then drops carrier. JG> Hello John, JG> This sounds very much like a problem I'm having, even though my JG> modem is only 2400 bps. JG> My solution: Before trying to dial out I get the modem to perform a JG> self test by using the AT&T8 command. If this returns garbage instead JG> of text I re-initialise the modem and try again. Sometimes, like JG> today, I may have to do this a few times. Once I get a text response, JG> which should be "000", I know I will get a good connection when I JG> dial. JG> I still don't know why I need to go through this messing about, but JG> it certainly saves me a lot of phone calls. Try it. BTW If you get a JG> better answer than this one could you pass it on to me, please? JG> Regards, JG> John Hhmmm. This does sound very strange to me for a 2400 bps. It would seem that there is a fault in the modem rather than the line. The lines are "officially" guarenteed for 9600bpc communication. I will give it a go and see if it does work. BTW does this procedure get you 100% success rate? I will let you know how I get on. Cheers John ...
